This project is for my Old Man: a widowed man, in his late 50s/early 60s, who lived with his two adult children and two dogs. After they moved out of the house where he raised them he found it too large for just himself and the dogs, prompting him to look for a new place to live.
As he approaches retirement, and given that his children typically visit for several days at a time, it became essential to design the home with two divisible areas. Therefore it can be split into two independent dwellings: each with its own bathroom, kitchen, living area, and ground-level bedroom —foreseeing potential age-related mobility limitations. Either level, both connected by stairs and ramps, can function as a home for the owner or even as a short-term rental property when he doesn't have other guests. The layout also foresees an outdoor barbecue area distanced from the lower dwelling to guarantee its privacy, while maximizing natural sunlight within and offering both unobstructed views of the neighboring lake.
